VW Bay Window Power Steering Conversion

Original Bay Window steering is agricultural even by the standards of the era it was built in: heavy, vague, and hard work at parking speeds. There is no bolt-on kit that solves this properly for every van, which is why this kind of job is fabrication work as much as it is mechanical.

The conversion means designing and building mounting points for a rack-and-pinion setup that was never engineered into this chassis, then getting the geometry right so the van steers properly rather than just differently. It draws on the same custom steering and chassis fabrication the workshop has been doing on classic VWs for decades.

The van ends up with steering that feels like it belongs in a modern car, while everything else about it stays exactly as it should.
